Essential Technical Indicators
Essential Technical Indicators#
Technical analysis uses mathematical indicators to study price movements and identify trading opportunities. Here are the four most widely used indicators by professional traders and how to interpret them correctly.

RSI (Relative Strength Index)#
The RSI measures the speed and magnitude of price movements on a scale from 0 to 100. Developed by J. Welles Wilder in 1978, it is the most widely used oscillator in technical analysis. An RSI above 70 indicates an overbought zone (the asset is potentially overvalued), while an RSI below 30 signals an oversold zone.
RSI Tip
The RSI is more reliable when used in conjunction with other indicators. An overbought RSI does not automatically mean you should sell: in a strong uptrend, the RSI can stay overbought for weeks.
MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence)#
The MACD measures the difference between two exponential moving averages (12 and 26 periods). When the MACD line crosses above the signal line, it is a buy signal. The histogram visualizes the gap between these two lines: growing bars indicate accelerating bullish momentum.
Bollinger Bands#
Created by John Bollinger in the 1980s, these bands measure volatility around a moving average (typically 20 periods). The bands widen when volatility increases and tighten when it decreases. A price touching the upper band may signal overbought conditions, and vice versa for the lower band.
Moving Averages (MA)#
Moving averages smooth out price noise to reveal the underlying trend. The most commonly used are the 50 MA (medium-term trend) and the 200 MA (long-term trend). The 50 MA crossing above the 200 MA forms a 'Golden Cross' (bullish signal), and conversely a 'Death Cross' (bearish signal).

Golden Rule
No indicator is 100% reliable. The best traders always combine multiple indicators and confirm them with price action before making a decision.
