The Rise of the Neo-Brokers

The Rise of the Neo-Brokers#

In the space of a few years, neo-brokers have democratized access to the stock market. With elegant mobile interfaces and commissions close to zero, they have attracted millions of new investors, particularly those aged 18 to 35. But the revolution has its darker corners.

The Robinhood Revolution#

Launched in 2013, Robinhood was the first to offer commission-free trading in the United States. The app attracted 23 million users and made trading popular among millennials. The GameStop episode (January 2021) nonetheless exposed the limits of the model: suspending purchases of GME triggered an enormous backlash.

The European Landscape#

  • Trade Republic (Germany): 4+ million users, EUR 1 per order, free investment plans
  • BUX (Netherlands): zero commission, fractional shares
  • Scalable Capital (Germany): broker plus robo-adviser, flat subscription
  • Lightyear (Estonia): zero commission, multi-currency
  • In France: Bourse Direct, Degiro, and Saxo remain the most popular

How Do They Make Money?#

The key question: if trading is "free", how are neo-brokers profitable? The main answer is PFOF (Payment for Order Flow): they sell your orders to market makers (Citadel, Virtu), who execute them with a slight spread in their own favor. In Europe, PFOF has been banned since 2026 under MiFID II, forcing a change of model.

The Risks of Gamification#

Neo-brokers stand accused of "gamifying" investing: confetti after a purchase, leaderboards, push notifications urging you to trade. This gamification can encourage overtrading and excessive risk-taking, particularly among young and inexperienced investors.

Tip

A neo-broker is an excellent starting point for investing small amounts. But turn off the notifications, ignore the "trending stocks", and follow a long-term strategy (dollar-cost averaging into ETFs). Simplicity should not become impulsiveness.

Warning

Investing carries a risk of capital loss. Make sure you understand the hidden costs (spread, currency conversion) even when commissions are zero. This article is for educational purposes.
